The Reactions to Auto-Tune
Not everybody is the biggest fan of Auto-Tune.
Jay Z titled the lead single of his album The Blueprint 3 as D.O.A. (Death of Autotune). He says too many people had jumped on the Auto-tune bandwagon and that the trend had become a gimmick.
In Netflix’s docu-series This Is Pop, T-Pain opened up about his 4 year depressive episode that sparked because of a comment Usher made to him. T-Pain is known for innovating the use of Auto-tune and Usher had something to say about it. “You kinda f*cked up music” -Usher to T. Pain (2013)
At the 51st Grammy Awards (early 2009), the band Death Cab for Cuties wore blue ribbons to protest against the use of Auto-tune in the music industry
Christina Aguilera publicly wore a shirt saying “Auto-tune is for p*ssies” Ironically, when later interviewed by Sirius/XM, she clarified that Auto-tune could be used in a “more creative way” and noted that her song “Elastic Love” from Bionic uses it.
In 2010, the reality TV show The X Factor admitted to using Auto-Tune to improve the voices of contestants (supposedly they stopped after that)
Also in 2010, Time magazine included Auto-Tune in their list of "The 50 Worst Inventions"
Some artists feel that Auto-Tune offers unique benefits for creativity and new possibilities.
Travis Scott, Bon Iver, Future, T-Pain, Kesha, and Daft Punk are all open about their Auto-tune usage.
Auto-tune changed the game for pop, hip-hop, R&B and even country music.
