Auto-Tune Sparks Controversy

The Reactions to Auto-Tune

Negatives :(

Not everybody is the biggest fan of Auto-Tune.

D.O.A. - Jay Z

Jay Z titled the lead single of his album The Blueprint 3 as D.O.A. (Death of Autotune). He says too many people had jumped on the Auto-tune bandwagon and that the trend had become a gimmick.

Usher v. T-Pain Drama

In Netflix’s docu-series This Is Pop, T-Pain opened up about his 4 year depressive episode that sparked because of a comment Usher made to him. T-Pain is known for innovating the use of Auto-tune and Usher had something to say about it. “You kinda f*cked up music” -Usher to T. Pain (2013)

More Negative Reactions

  1. At the 51st Grammy Awards (early 2009), the band Death Cab for Cuties wore blue ribbons to protest against the use of Auto-tune in the music industry

  2. Christina Aguilera publicly wore a shirt saying “Auto-tune is for p*ssies” Ironically, when later interviewed by Sirius/XM, she clarified that Auto-tune could be used in a “more creative way” and noted that her song “Elastic Love” from Bionic uses it.

  3. In 2010, the reality TV show The X Factor admitted to using Auto-Tune to improve the voices of contestants (supposedly they stopped after that)

  4. Also in 2010, Time magazine included Auto-Tune in their list of "The 50 Worst Inventions"

Positives :)

Some artists feel that Auto-Tune offers unique benefits for creativity and new possibilities.

Travis Scott, Bon Iver, Future, T-Pain, Kesha, and Daft Punk are all open about their Auto-tune usage.

Auto-tune changed the game for pop, hip-hop, R&B and even country music.

“Artists grew to see autotune as a way to meld their voices and fit them with many different kinds of moods and beats. It wasn't a cop-out or something to be ashamed of, but a skill to conquer”

-The Miscellany News (2021)
